Levi was used to his strange shenanigans, but still not particularly fond of his feelings toward her. But given he was about to go under and not wake up for a while, she might as well let him have his last wish. She kissed him briefly, a small peck, then backed away. She was glad to know as much as she did that she had learned the past few months, or else she would be ill prepared for what she knew was to come. She sat back in a chair that was facing partially him, and partially the door so she would let no one in, yet be able to tell if anything were to go wrong.

"Okay. Let's do this."

Windfall worked swiftly, completing the new skull in just over an hour. He quenched the tungsten in a near by barrel of water, filling the room with steam. He spun around, skull inhand.

"...Alas poor Yorick, I knew him well..."

A small bot scuttled over and retrieved the skull from Windfall. It made its way toward the back of the forge to what looked like a large metal spider. In the middle lay a stainless steel surgical bed, prepped and ready for operation. The legs of the spider were various arms, all controlled via a central processor, that would be performing the gist of the operation. While Windfall is under, the machine will need to operate on its own, executing whatever commands are stored in it in conjunction with the massive surgery program Windfall had installed a few weeks ago.

Windfall walked over to Levi and wrapped his arms around her.

"...So sexy, are you ready to supervise? Everything should go according to plan, but in case it doesn't, I'll need ...

Levi shrugged, not feeling she needed to respond to that. She sat and watched him, waiting. After all, he knew how to shape the metal and all the rest. She would just be needed for assisting with the rest. She yawned, waiting for her turn to act was going to be a bit boring. So instead of watching him strictly, she stood and began checking the room to make sure it was completely secured.

Levi was used to his strange obsession with becoming a machine so just listened up until he grabbed her. Instead of trying to pull away, she glared at him in anger for a moment. The time she had been here, she had learned a great deal about the art of healing and mechanics. It was good to have the knowledge, to know something beyond what everyone else knew. She had been helping Windfall with all of the other replacements, so she figured she'd help him with this one now. When he let her go, she rubbed her arms, even though she still could not feel pain. The other feeling had returned, just no pain. Which was good.

"Can do, Windfall. I'll be helping you with this as well?"

Taegan nodded, grabbing simply her weapons. She had a helmet, which she hardly ever wore, but she grabbed in anyone and put it on. She tied her weapons to her belt and rushed out behind Windfall, toward whatever commotion had been going on.

Windfall stepped back, peering at the map before him.

"...Hmmm..."

He walked behind Taegan and crouched down, his head next to hers. Speaking softly, he drew his finger across the map horizontally near the bottom.

"...If we advance here, we can trench out another foothold. The enemy is suppressed, for the moment, but morale is a bit weak..."

A bright flash flickered outside the tent. Windfall dashed to the entrance, poking his head out long enough to hear the screams. He whipped around, grabbing a few things from the near by shelf.

"...Nevermind, morale is horrid and we need to move..."

Windfall heard Levi speak, but did not answer for a moment. Instead, he decided to stoke the fire for the large block of tungsten he had previously acquired. The bot hoisted the block up and Windfall slid it into the flames. He turned back to Levi, his eyes randomly shiftingcolors.

"...Her brother recently fell in battle against the machines..."

He let out a soft sigh as he turned back the the fire, staring through the flames and smoke. The bot beside him pumped the bellows as the material within began to glow. In an hour or so he would begincutting.

"...So, in order to defeat the machines, I shall become one..."

He reached under the work table and retrieved a cast of a human skull.

"...I made this a while back, then whittled it down into the skull shape you see before you. It's slightly oversize, but I'm going to need it this way. When the material in the fire is good and ready, I will carve it to match the exact shape of this skull, my skull, so I can...

The girl had stayed on the stairs, waiting to see what happened. Taegan smiled.

"I don't know you...I don't want to know you...Or why you're here...Nor do I care. Love is a thing of my past, something I can no longer hold close for the pain it has caused me. But I ask only that, if you know what's good for you, you will help Windfall whenever he needs you, therefore, being a help to me. The Machines must end." She turned toward the door, walking out and into the woods.

Levi stared at the door, blinking and not understanding what the heck had just happened. She shrugged and followed Windfall downstairs. She got inside just before he shut it and sat there watching him. "What's wrong with her? She's weird."

Taegan did not look up when he entered, continuing to stare out into the distance. She tilted her head to the side, nodding when he spoke. She understood that staying in one place for too long would never do, not when the machines did not have to sleep.

"Yeah. Too bad knocking out the sun would kill us all." During the past few months the machines had developed a more advanced solar power that allowed them to charge batteries and store them so they could continue marching all night. On top of that, all the flying machines that Taegan knew they had had finally made the appearances to prove her right. Since Tedros's death, basically, everything had went to hell in ahand-basket.

"Alright then, Sergeant, where are we going? I assume you've scouted around for me?" She finally looked at him. Her face had changed. It was thinner, stronger, and another scar ran down her right cheek. Had she had...

Windfall nodded, then bowed.

"...Please give me some time. I have a few... upgrades... to manage, but then I'm all yours, General Sir..."

He winked, then turned toward the foundry. He began walking towards his destination, then stopped and turned toward her.

"...You may not know me in another month, but it's still me..."

He turned back and headed down the stairs into the darkness below. A few moments later, he crossed the threshold into the forge area and closed the heavy doors behind him, the massive bolt clinking into place.

Windfall stood atop the hill aside the encampment, casting his gaze across the land, taking in the dozens of small flickers of light, some from camp fires, most from weaponry. His flowing gray mane waved in the stiff breeze. He let out a soft sigh, then made his way back towards the trenches.

He clamored down into the deep gash in the earth, his new set of wings digging into the ground as he landed with a loud thud on the ground. A few bullets whizzed by, one taking a slight bite out of his rightear.

"...Damn..."

Windfall took off on a run away from the encampment, the echoes of his heavy feet drawing additional gun fire. Taking care of his positioning, he jumped up, spread his wings, and flew up into the air. He spun around, launching a barrage of buckshot at the new flickers of light near the trenches. As suddenly as he had shot into the air, he returned to the trench, walking as quietly as possible back toward the encampment.

Taegan smiled, but it was a bitter gesture, full of little or no warmth. She followed him in, where the bot took his block, and they stopped. "I ask nothing of you, Windfall, except for when I call for you...Will you be ready? She looked up in time to see someone running down the stairs. The girl was short and slender, had metal arms, dark hair. Taegan lifted her eyebrow and made no comment. The girl stopped upon seeing Taegan and turned to leave. "Uh..Sorry. Didn't mean to interrupt."

Not knowing what to say, Windfall nodded to her and continued his steady march. He managed to walk backwards up a couple of steps and through the open castle doors. They quickly closed shut after the two made it inside. A small, stocky bot drove up next to Windfall, accepted the block of metal, then took off towards the foundry.

Taegan did not try to keep up. She stayed at her steady pace while walking beside him and when he got ahead of her. He finally spoke and she barely heard him, caught up in childhood memories.

"Tedros is dead." Her face contorted for a brief moment in pain and threat of tears, but she fought it and won. No tears were shed; she hardly felt anything anymore.

Not sure of what to say, Windfall continued on in silence. He shifted the weight of his cargo from his left shoulder over to his right, careful not to let the massive weight fall.

They finally came within range of the castle. Windfall picked up speed for a moment before turning around and facing Taegan, slowing his march, yet still continuing towards the castle.

Taegan did not respond but quickened her pace once again. She caught up with him a bit more quickly this time, whether because he had slowed or she had quickened was beyond her. She kept pace with him this time. The look on her face was somber, longing. She remembered when she had seen him before the ship, but nothing during the ride. The fever and such were complete blurs in her memory. She did not remember the large man or any of her strangebehavior.

"When we were on the island...And I said that a friend had died...I lied." She did not look at him as she spoke, not seeing a point in it. She wiped her face, a streak of red being left behind from her hands. Only then did she realize her hand had blood on it. She lifted an eyebrow but shrugged it off. It seemed to fit the mood she was in and the situation she saw in the future. Then may be metaphorical blood on her hands, but the fact that it was there now was strangely appropriate. She...

Taegan woke up, unsure of how she had gotten there. She felt better than she had. But one thing was clear that would haunt her memories for ages: the look of her brother's dead face. Tears sprang to her eyes and she jumped up, running. She vaguely remembered Windfall being with her. She realized she was on a ship that had just docked, so quickly searched the ship for Windfall before exiting. She saw him walking in the far distance and took off in his direction.

He walked faster than she could run, probably in part because of his internal machinations, but she began to run faster and eventually began catching up. She realized where they were as she passed by all the foliage, having run this way many times before. Tears spilled down her cheek because of the last time she was here. It had been an almost permanent ending. But she did not wish to end her friendship with Windfall, even if they could not work out in other ways. She needed him now, more than ever.

Several days passed before the ship docked a few miles away from the castle. Windfall bid the ship captain adieu, then began the long walk back to his workshop, toting along his large brick of metal. He was irritated and frustrated at the moment. He needed another piece to finish his map, and wasn't quite for sure what was up with Taegan. He shrugged as he thought to himself, his head down, marching toward the castle.

Months of planning and lots of hair loss later, Taegan was sitting in her chambers going over a map. Raids and destruction of all of the Biotech's encampments had been mostly successful. Overall, her wins outnumbered her losses. She was not sure why, exactly, other than having an outstanding team of people on her side. Windfall, Ian, Gwen, on top of many more. All of them were perfect! She had fought in a few battles herself, coming out with a few more scars, a lot less sanity, but she had survived and become better for it. Gone was the childlike attitude she used to carry. Now, her eyes always held a deadly seriousness that she could not hide behind her mask of innocence.

She yawned as she looked over the maps. Red X's marked all of the camps that they had won. Many of them were previous human encampments, the ones who had been friendly to the machines. They had let the people escape with their lives to the Machines, but she doubted any of them were alive now. The machines were ruthless,...

The boat rocked as it departed, quickly getting up to speed along it's path to the middle of nowhere. Windfall knelt down next to her, careful to remain out of striking distance.

Windfall decided to scour the ship, just to make sure no one was tagging along that shouldn't be. He had managed to uproot one stowaway and send him on his way when he stumbled upon a bloodied Taegan. He knelt down beside her, keeping a bit of distance between them.

Taegan ran after she sliced the guys wrist nearly off. She had no idea where Windfall had gone, but she knew she needed to get off this island. So she ran to the docks and happened to get onto the ship Windfall was on. She flew down the stairs into the passengers quarters and hid in a little dark corner, shaking and rocking back and forth. The bloody knife was still in her hand.

Windfall chuckled to himself, strolling onward toward the docks. He figured she had enough to deal with without him hanging around. Things always seem to make themselves worse when they were together.

He made his way back to the docks. Asking around a bit, and flashing a few coins, he managed to requisition a barge. It was considerably larger than needed, but Windfall really didn't care. So long as it got from point A to point B, it was all good. He paid the captain, and prepared for the voyage to Felgrand.

Windfall decided to explore the ship while he waited for preparations. He clamored down into the belly of the ship, taking his time and going over every detail.
